AF Contactor Systems Save Space, Lower Maintenance Cost

2010-02-16 - ABB's AF contactors use 30% less panel space because of their ability to close couple with overloads, disconnects and breakers. Their magnet on top design allows contact inspection and maintenance without removing the power cables. This makes periodic maintenance as much as 50% faster, lowering operating costs. Wide AC/DC coil operating voltage reduces inventory and eliminates contact chatter caused by brown-outs. Optimizing the mechanical & electrical design plus lowering the maintenance cost, created a new generation of coordinated, close-coupled low voltage control products: the A-line system . . . Contactors are coordinated with the ABB molded case circuit breakers, disconnect switches and overload relays, providing designers, panel builders and end users with the best performance, reliability and flexibility. Preassembled connection bar kits allow the close-coupling of ABB components to save space, assembly material, installation time and minimizing cabling connections. The new design of the large AF contactors, places the magnet at the top of the unit and the main contact system at the bottom. This design provides a number of advantages over previous designs:

Easy, Fast Installation with coordination

  • Easy connection between the contactor and other system components because the terminals are at the same level.
  • Easy connection can reduce installation time up to 30 mins.
  • All connections to the control circuits are easily accessible from the front which facilitates installation and measurement.
  • Full coordination tables available for UL508A - SB4 approval

Faster contact inspection lowers operating cost
  • Not necessary to remove power cables for inspection and maintenance.
  • Faster inspection access can save 50% of maintenance time
  • Electrical operation of the contactor is impossible during contact inspection since the magnet system is removed with the front section.
  • Low, built-in terminals and the option of terminal shrouds give you a touch-safe solution.

Wide Coil Voltages improve reliability, reduce inventory
  • Wide coil voltages only require 4 to cover 20-250VDC, 24-500VAC 50/60Hz; reducing inventory cost
  • Wide coil voltages keep contactor energized at 55% of the rated coil voltage.
  • Wide coil voltage help eliminate contact chatter due to brown outs.

Global approvals and support
  • NEMA, UL, IEC, CSA,
  • VDE approved international standards
  • Local availability and global support through ABB global support

ABB AF contactors and the A-Line system give you the power to design and install faster; to lower maintenance costs; and provide coordinated protection and control.
