ABB awarded second boiler contract for Indonesian private power project

Zurich, Switzerland, July 16, 1996 - ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has been awarded a second contract to deliver coal-fired boilers to a private power plant in Indonesia. The value of the contract is approximately US$ 250 million. The order was placed by PT Jawa Power, who will own and operate the power station, part of the Paiton power project located about 100 kilometers southeast of Surabaya in East Java.

Under terms of the contract, ABB will design, fabricate, and commission two 610-megawatt boiler islands, known as Paiton Units 5 and 6. The equipment will be erected by a consortium of ABB and P.T. Jurong Engineering Lestari of Indonesia. Paiton 6 is expected to be commercially operational by July 1999, with Paiton 5 following in January 2000. The plant will be fuelled by Indonesian coal and the electricity will be sold to the local utility, PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN).

Paiton Units 5 and 6 belong to the Paiton power complex, part of Indonesia`s policy to promote private sector power projects. Paiton Phase II is being built by an international consortium of which ABB is a member along with Black & Veatch Constructors Inc. of the U.S. and consortium leader Siemens KWU of Germany. Project sponsor and power plant owner PT Jawa Power is made up of subsidiaries of Siemens AG of Germany, PowerGen plc of the U.K., and PT Bumipertiwi Tatapradipta of Indonesia.

The order follows a similar contract awarded to ABB in May 1995 to supply two 615-megawatt boilers to Paiton Units 7 and 8, part of the Paiton Phase I project.ABB has also delivered two 400-megawatt boilers to a state-owned power plant at the same location.

The contract was won by ABB`s Power Generation Business in Windsor, Connecticut, USA, part of ABB's Power Generation segment which employs more than 46,000 people worldwide with orders in 1995 of over US$ 10 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 210,000 employees with orders in 1995 of over US$ 36 billion.
