ABB wins US$ 230-million clean-coal power plant order for Germany

Zurich, Switzerland, April 23, 1996 - ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has won an order valued at approximately US$ 230 million to build a combined heat and power plant at Cottbus in Brandenburg, eastern Germany. The order was placed jointly by the local utility, Stadtwerke Cottbus, and the Hamburger Kommunalfinanz-Gruppe. In addition to the planning, construction and commissioning of the turnkey plant, the order also includes a long-term service agreement. The plant is scheduled to begin operation in Autumn 1999.

By utilizing ABB`s advanced pressurized fluidized bed combustion technology (PFBC), the power plant - the first of its kind in Germany - will be able to use locally-mined, low quality brown coal fuel more efficiently and with lower emissions than conventional coal-fired plants. PFBC combines the excellent environmental properties of fluidized bed combustion with the high efficiency of combined-cycle technology, driving both a gas and steam turbine. ABB has built similar PFBC power plants in Japan, Spain, Sweden and the USA.

ABB will supply the clean-coal technology boilers, the gas and steam turbosets and the complete electrical infrastructure, including the overall power plant control system. The plant will generate 74 megawatts (MW) of electricity for the local power grid and an additional 220 MW of steam and hot water for the use of the city inhabitants and local industry.

In Germany, ABB employs around 33,000 people with orders in 1995 of over US$ 7 billion. ABB`s Power Generation segment employs more than 46,000 people worldwide with orders in 1995 of over US$ 10 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 210,000 people with orders in 1995 of over US$ 36 billion.
