ABB: Howard Pierce to succeed Robert A. Donovan as Head of the Americas Region

Peter S. Janson to head US operations, Richard J. Slember to retire

Zurich, Switzerland, June 21, 1996 - ABB, the international electrical engineering company, announced today the appointment of Howard Pierce (55, and American citizen) as Executive Vice President and member of the Group Executive Committee, responsible for the Americas Region, effective September 1, 1996. Pierce succeeds Robert A. Donovan, who died in a plane crash near Dubrovnik, Croatia, earlier this year. Richard J. Slember (62), who has headed the region on an interim basis since April 1996, will retire as he planned to do before his interim appointment.

Pierce, who presently heads ABB`s operations in China, joined ABB in 1991 from Westinghouse.

"Howard has an excellent record of achieving results and growing our business," Percy Barnevik, Chairman of the Board and CEO of ABB, said today. "He has held very demanding positions in the U.S. and lately in Europe and was highly successful in all of them. In his present position in China, he has led ABB`s growth in this important market and he will leave an excellently organized and forward-oriented company."

Also effective September 1, 1996, Peter S. Janson (49, and American citizen), presently heading ABB`s Industrial and Building Systems Segment in the US, has been appointed CEO of ABB U.S. Janson joined the company in 1969 and was country manager in Canada before taking up his present position in the US.

The ABB Group employs approximately 210,000 people worldwide with orders in 1995 of over US$ 36 billion.
