PLC & HMI-FAQ

  • Q: What is required to select a PLC

A: The first thing you need to know to is the Input & Output (I/O)count.
    # of Digital Inputs (voltage levels 24Vdc, 110Vac)
    # of Digital Outputs (voltage levels: 24Vdc, 110Vac, Relay)
    # of Analog Inputs (4-20mA, 0-10V, TC, RTD, etc.)
    # of Analog Outputs (4-20mA, 0-10V, TC, RTD, etc.)
Next you need to know if there are any Remote Drops and (how many, and how much I/O for each)
Next you need to know what kind of communication is required if any (Modbus, P-Bus, Ethernet, Devicenet, etc)

  • Q: On the CX Touch screens, what is the difference between Alarms & Events

A: Alarms are controlled with Bits and will disappear when they are corrected.
Events can be controlled with words or bits and can be retained.
Events can also be logged date & time.

  • Q: On the CX Touch screens, how do you make Events retentive?

A: From the EDIT Menu, go to the "System Parameters" Select the "Hardware Tab" See "Retentive Memory" and on EventLog DataBase: select YES Also, on the "General Tab" under Extra No. of Event: When there is a 0 in the field the default is 200 messages before they start falling off. When you put a 1000 you get 1200 messages before they start falling off.

  • Q: On the CX Touch screens, how do you make text visible / invisible:

A: Select a Bit Lamp object Under the Shape tab, Un-Select the Use shape field Under the Label tab see the "State" field. Don't put anything on State 0. Type your text in State 1.

  • Q: On the CX Touch screens, how do you make a Shape visible / invisible:

A: The only way to do it is to create a shape and use a small discrete pixel for the OFF State & and use the desired shape for the ON State.

  • Q: My Computor only has a USB port. How do I go on-line to my PLC

A: A typical problem in communicating with PLC's is due to the COM Port. Older computers have a designated COM1. New computers do not have a designated COM port and a USB to serial convertor is used. The convertor must be set up for a communication port (ex: COM1). Also, one should check the settings in the software, and adjust the COM port settings to match the settings of the convertor. For the AC010: From the top menu, go to: Online > Serial Interface Setup > Select the appropriate COM port (ex: COM 1, COM 2, COM 3, COM 4) to match the USB Convertor For the AC31 PLC's : From the top menu, go to: Online > Communication Parameters > Set-up the appropriate gateway with the COM port (ex: COM 1, COM 2, COM 3, COM 4) to match the USB Convertor.
